Why I Volunteer With Convivio
I have a deep love of my Italian American family roots–the unshakable religious beliefs, the amorous cultural practices and celebrations, the soul-touching arts and music, the fabulous food. . .and all of the incredible stories that connect our Italian American community. I never took for granted the sheer gift of being Italian American and how that treasured experience molded me into who I am today. I’m forever reminded of how my relatives and other courageous immigrants from Italy who boldly and bravely came to America, in their own spirited ways, helped shaped western civilization!Â
Our contributions as a people–whether ordinary or extraordinary–matter! The pictures matter! The memories matter! I’ve always had a fervent desire to preserve those stories of the past and spotlight the stories of the present. I had a pulse-pounding fear that it could all fade away in my lifetime. That’s precisely why I published AMICI Magazine as a young writer in the late 90s.
My father was a storyteller. When I was a kid, he always reminded me that there are really only two kinds of people: Those who are Italian and those who wish they were. I had no choice but to believe it! Convivio’s mission embraces both groups. So the question becomes “Why NOT volunteer with Convivio?” There’s something deliciously wonderful for everyone. And it’s something much needed for a time such as this.
So here I am. Using my time and talents that cherish my heritage and share it with those who weren’t so lucky!
I guess you could say I’m doing what I was always meant to do. Now that I’m finally retired, it’s time to go into full bloom.
