about the scholarship
Philosopher, poet, advocate, crusader. Husband, father, grandfather, competitor, friend. A humanist, a leader, and a lion who believed that a great American government was one modeled after a great family—where all share the successes and the disappointments with a spirit of mutuality.
This was Mario Cuomo, the three-time Governor of New York, a son of Italian immigrants, and a role model for generations of Italian Americans. He was a true champion of the people who fought hard for civil rights and the needs of the citizens while carefully balancing his personal views as distinctly separate from the role of the government. Mario Cuomo was known as one of the greatest orators of all time with his ability to converge passion, vision, and moral leadership into a mobilizing call to action.
The Mario Cuomo Scholarship will be awarded to two law students, one at the University of San Diego School of Law, one at St. John’s University School of Law, who best capture the essence, ethics, and servant leadership ethos of Mario Cuomo.
