One of the great questions our nation faces today is, what is a community? The answer seems simple enough — a group of people, a neighborhood, a shared identity. Yet true community goes deeper. It is not built merely on proximity or similarity, but on enduring commitment — the willingness to care for one another across time and circumstance.
For over a century, Washington Elementary has stood as a cornerstone of the Little Italy community, serving as both a first school and a second home for generations of families. For decades, the bells of Our Lady of the Rosary have echoed down the streets, answered by the school bells of Washington Elementary — a living rhythm of neighborhood life. Today, as in times past, many of its bright, hardworking students face immense challenges, including unstable housing and lack of basic necessities. To support these children and their families, the Convivio Society is once again launching Cards for Kids, a heartfelt winter initiative dedicated to bringing hope and dignity to those in need.
Community exists only through mutual care, just as civilization endures only when its people act with civility. At Convivio, we believe this means tending to those around us — knowing that in our own moments of weakness, sickness, youth, or old age, others have done the same for us.
In this spirit of true community, we invite you to participate by donating monetary gifts that will be turned into gift cards for Washington Elementary’s most vulnerable students. These cards empower families to purchase essentials — food, clothing, and small gifts that spark joy in a child’s heart. Every dollar donated becomes tangible assistance, ensuring that generosity meets real need here in our own neighborhood. More than that, it sends a message: a child may not yet have a house, but in Little Italy, they have a home.Cards for Kids reminds us that even the smallest act of giving can make a world of difference. Together, we can brighten the holidays for Little Italy’s children — and show them that their neighbors truly care. Make a difference today!
