Christmas Eve 2024 marks the beginning of the Jubilee year in Italy, a profound event with roots deep in both history and faith.
The Anno Santo or Holy Year, the Jubilee occurs every 25 years in the Catholic Church, offering pilgrims an opportunity for renewal, forgiveness, and fresh beginnings. In many ways, the Jubilee aligns beautifully with the spirit of a new year. Just as January 1st beckons us to shed the past and envision new possibilities, the Jubilee symbolizes a spiritual springtime—a chance to rediscover purpose and reconnect with what truly matters. For the Italian diaspora and Italophiles across the globe, the Jubilee year offers a unique opportunity to celebrate our heritage while choosing personal renewal.
Italy’s Jubilee tradition is centered in Rome, where pilgrims flock to the Eternal City to walk through the Holy Doors of St. Peter’s Basilica. These doors, opened only during a Jubilee, symbolize stepping into a new life, leaving behind the burdens of the old, and in the same way that the 25-year cycle of the jubilee mirrors life’s rhythms, we too can establish cycles of reflection and reinvention. We can celebrate by reconnecting with family traditions, learning the language of our ancestors, or reigniting a passion left dormant. The Jubilee is as much about community as it is about the individual, offering a reminder that renewal often begins with strengthening ties to those around us.
At Convivio, we know that coming together through cooking a traditional meal, exploring art and literature, practicing language and music, or simply setting aside time to reflect on the past are ways to connect with our heritage and bring it with us into the future. In the spirit of the Jubilee, we are looking forward to continuing the renewal of our community with language-learning soirees, Italian cultural events and a space for you to connect with your community in Little Italy. Buon Natale e Felice Anno Nuovo a tutti!
